Design of power supply and automation systems

Engineering and connection of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and water supply systems to the power networks shall be carried out pursuant to the current standards and rules for design and operation of electrical facilities.

Pursuant to the specification code 60.13330.2012 “Heating, ventilation and air conditioning” as well as the specification code 30.13330.2012 “Internal water pipe-lines and sewage systems of buildings” ventilation, smoke exhaust, emergency ventilation systems shall be carried out pursuant to the first class of reliability. Systems preventing inlet installations from freezing as well as pump units are also referred the first reliability class. In case there is no an opportunity to provide connection pursuant to the first class of reliability one may consider power connection from two independent sources of power supply or from one power source in case this source is connected to separate lines. Power feeding shall be executed through different power supply channels in this case. Additional conditions of reliability shall be indicated in the design performance specification.

There are special requirements for ventilation systems in case of a fire in the premises that are equipped with an automatic fire-alarm system or automatic fire-fighting equipment. In this case it is necessary to engineer the opportunity to switch off power supply from ventilation systems, air conditioning units and thermal air curtains. But there is an exception – smoke protection systems. When using such systems it is necessary to switch on air supply units, emergency smoke ventilations including opening the fire-prevention chimney valves.

The control systems for emergency smoke ventilation shall be as follows:

  • Automatic (controlled by the fire alarm system);
  • Remote (remote control from distant premises or from outside of the building depending on the reliability class of the premises).

 When engineering power supply and automation heating systems as well as ventilation, air conditioning and water supply it is recommended to take into account a number of important issues. For example, the consequence of steps is important when launching or switching off the systems, in emergency cases and in case of a fire. (Delays or advance in switching on/off smoke input and exhaust ventilations; delays in switching off blowers of input systems equipped with calorifers after the stop signal has been sent from the control unit, etc.).

It is quite necessary to have emergency situation under the automated control, however one shall not forget about the standard operating conditions. Such points as the availability of the unit that controls systems conditions are also considered. Pressure sensors, temperature and air sensors shall also be installed.

Indication of systems condition by the remote control or by switch boards together with automated or manual adjusting is considered. Moreover, engineers recommend having a reserve installation in case of emergency situations.

The key element of any power supply and automatic system is in the properly engineered project.
